Paper money collecting is one of the most nuanced areas of numismatics. A note that looks ordinary to the untrained eye can be worth thousands, and a note that looks impressive can be nearly worthless. At Clemson Coins, Currency and Bullion, we have decades of experience evaluating U.S. and world paper money and we pay accordingly.
We buy everything: large-size pre-1923 currency, national bank notes from across the Southeast, small-size Federal Reserve Notes, Confederate and obsolete currency, high-denomination bills ($500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000), star notes, error notes, military payment certificates, and entire currency collections of any size. Our current inventory includes a 1901 $10 Bison Legal Tender graded PCGS 66 PPQ, a 1934A $1,000 FRN San Francisco graded PMG 66 EPQ (one of three finest known), a 1896 $5 Educational Silver Certificate graded PCGS 65 PPQ, and a 1869 $5 Rainbow Legal Tender graded PMG 66 EPQ. This gives you a sense of the caliber of material we regularly buy and sell.
National bank notes were printed between 1863 and 1935 and issued by thousands of individual banks across the United States. Some are extremely common and worth about $40. The best examples, from rare banks, in high grade, with low serial numbers, can be worth $10,000 or more. Everything in between depends on a set of factors that most dealers do not fully understand. We do.

Notes from small towns such as Walhalla, Pickens, Seneca, Easley, Williamston, Belton, Honea Path, Iva, Abbeville, Laurens, Newberry, and dozens of others across the Upstate are a particular specialty. If your note is from a town you have barely heard of, that is often a very good sign.

Do not clean your notes. Cleaning destroys value. A naturally circulated note is always worth more than a cleaned one. Even a gentle wipe with a cloth can reduce a note's grade and its value significantly. Experienced dealers can detect cleaning instantly.
Do not fold or crease notes. A fold on a previously unfolded note can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars in value. Store notes flat, ideally in acid-free currency sleeves.
Avoid plastic bags and rubber bands. PVC in plastic bags can damage notes over time. Rubber bands leave marks. Use acid-free currency sleeves or simply leave notes as you found them.
Do not assume Confederate or obsolete notes are worthless. We have seen people throw away notes worth hundreds of dollars. Bring everything in and we will give you an honest evaluation at no charge.
Do not assume national bank notes are common. Many people assume their national bank note is worth $40 to $50 because they saw similar-looking notes online. Small differences in bank, series, serial number, and condition can make a note worth 10 to 100 times more. Always get a second opinion from a specialist.
Get a second opinion before selling to a pawn shop and/or a whipper snapper. Pawn shops typically pay a fraction of true value for paper money. Whipper snappers are just making a mark in the hobby.
